My Story

MY BACKGROUND

Like many of you, my HVAC experience started in my family's business

I got started in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration almost by chance, accepting a role in my family's business to support a new division of that organisation. It wasn't long however, before I realised that AC&R side of the company was far more interesting and so I moved into that.

My first clients were the game parks, beautiful hotels and banana and avocado farms in the North-East of South Africa, what was then known as the Eastern Transvaal.

I stayed in that role for five years and during this time saw first-hand how difficult running the business was, with cash-flow issues, non-payment of invoices, conflicts between the partners.. and so on.

GROWING A career

In 2002, I joined the industry in the UK.

I came back to the UK in 2000, and after a couple of years realised that I wanted to get back to the Air Conditioning market and so began a long career in the UK HVAC industry.

I've worked for contractors, large and small, good and not so good, as well as distributors and manufacturers. Family businesses were again a dominant theme during this time, and I gained a further appreciation for the complexities of leading a family business.

Along the way I have developed both my HVAC knowledge and my business knowledge having taken on growth challenges and process implementation challenges at every step of the way.

From being in a family air conditioning business in South Africa, with all of the ups and downs, obstacles and opportunities that brings, to working in very large corporate environments, I understand your challenges.

I know it is difficult when you join or create a family firm, or take on responsibility for it. I understand that finding the right staff is always hard and that getting the best clients is even harder when it seems like everyone else is in a race to the bottom.

Coaching

I have coached colleagues and clients all through my career as I've always known it to be the most effective way to support others and help them to succeed.

I went on to formalise my coaching credentials by graduating with a Masters degree in Coaching & Mentoring from Sheffield Hallam University.

I am a member of the European Mentoring & Coaching Council and adhere to the code and ethics of that organisation.

My qualifications have been greatly enhanced by the support and guidance of my personal coaches and mentors, Pam Featherstone and Zander Woodford-Smith, both of whom are phenomenally effective business coaches, as well as being the founders of the Business Coach Academy and the creators of the 9 Step Roadmap to Predictable Profit.

The 9 Step Roadmap has been implemented by hundreds of businesses across the world and is proven to deliver outstanding results.
